Eccentric Balkan capital of statues and bazaars
Skopje is theatrically eccentric, a capital rebuilt (after a devastating 1963 earthquake) with Soviet-style blocks and now overlaid with nationalist statuary and monuments of baroque excess. The Skopje 2014 project added dozens of bronze statues throughout the city—some exquisite, some absurd. The Old Bazaar remains genuinely Ottoman, and the combination of brutalism, kitsch, and authentic Balkan culture makes Skopje genuinely memorable and utterly unique.
