The world's oldest republic on a dramatic mountaintop
San Marino is the world's oldest republic, a tiny independent state perched atop a limestone mountain (Titan) overlooking the Italian plains. The capital, also San Marino, is a walled medieval city where shops and restaurants crowd narrow lanes, and the views extend for 50 kilometers across the Adriatic region. It's more tourist trap than authentic destination, but the novelty of a 1,600-year-old republic justified the drive.
