Hanseatic merchant city at the mouth of the Baltic
Gdańsk is an old Hanseatic merchant city risen (again) from ashes, where the Vistula flows into the Baltic and amber (fossilized tree resin mined here) seems to glow from every storefront. The long, narrow townhouses lean toward each other over a canal now lined with restaurants. This is where Solidarity's Lech Wałęsa sparked revolution, where amber literally washes ashore, and where Polish pride runs visibly through the streets.
